Jean-Baptiste Charcot, the Legendary Explorer

The exhibition unfolds following a progression both sequential and thematical, highlighting three of the character’s distinctive features.

« Birth of a passion » aims at introducing the man’s historical context, following the steps of Jean-Baptiste Charcot from his childhood years to his first expeditions. This will aim to show his curiosity, his open-mindedness favoured by a progressive familial environment, his taste for observation and so on.

« Commitment to science » focuses on scientific and technical culture born of or around the expeditions. Charcot believed in science and in its ability to improve the fate of mankind. The purposes of Charcot’s expeditions as well as their legacy will be highlighted.

« A humanist outlook » deals with exploring for the sake of mankind, specifically through the following themes: the community of men, the aim to walk in the steps of great explorers and the passing down on to new generations as well as the portraying of new explorers.
