Le Chant de la Terre, David Hockney
The exhibition “The Song of the Earth” brings together an exceptional selection of paintings by the renowned British artist David Hockney, including several monumental works, alongside compositions created on an iPad. His creations are presented in dialogue with works by Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and Constantin Meunier, as well as with a selection of Nordic Symbolist painters from the turn of the 20th century, including the Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt and the Estonian painter Konrad Mägi. All of these artists celebrate their deep and essential connection to the earth and nature.
Organized into six sections and punctuated with sound and visual elements, the exhibition weaves together painting, music, and poetry, echoing Gustav Mahler’s symphony “The Song of the Earth.” Composed in 1907–1908, this work pays tribute to nature—its fragile beauty and vital force. Here, it becomes the guiding thread of the exhibition: a sensitive breath that runs through the works, connects the artists, and envelops visitors in an experience that is at once sensory, poetic, and contemplative.
“I think this is what we need today: fresh images of this world, which is so beautiful” (David Hockney, 2022).
